Ep. 620: Standing up for Canadian Broadcasting

Guest: Rod Schween (Pattison Media)

“It's incredibly disappointing to see some Canadian Members of Parliament expressing concern about the closure of local media outlets, while seemingly ignoring one of the biggest contributors to the problem – where government advertising dollars are actually being spent,” says Rod Schween, the President at Pattison Media and Chair of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters.

Schween goes on to say, “According to the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, the majority of federal government digital advertising spending continues to flow to largely foreign-owned platforms, while Canadian broadcasters, newspapers, and local media organizations struggle to survive.”

“The irony is hard to miss,” says Schween. “We talk about supporting Canadian industries. We promote ‘Buy Canadian.’ We express concern about preserving Canadian culture, local journalism, and trusted news sources. Yet, government advertising budgets continue to enrich global digital giants that contribute little to Canada's local news ecosystem and often resist operating within the regulatory framework established by our country.”

We invited Rod Schween, Chair of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the President at Pattison Media, to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the state of affairs in Canada’s broadcast system.
