Guest: Scott Jacob (Jacob Bros. Construction)

The construction industry accounts for close to 10% of the British Columbia economy. The sector contributes over $28.5 billion annually and directly supports more than 264,000 jobs. “Construction is in every aspect of the economy,” says Scott Jacob, the President of Jacob Bros. Construction. “And it’s a reflection of the provincial economy.”

The economy in BC, according to the BC Real Estate Association, is flat and it has been treading water over the past year. “7,000 construction jobs have been lost,” says Chris Gardner, the President of the Independent Contractors Business Association. One of the factors affecting construction is the reduction in the three-year capital plan by roughly $7 billion, due to the provincial government’s pull back on a number of projects.

There are several factors contributing to the malaise in the construction industry that include a dramatic drop in housing starts, a building code quagmire, project approval delays, added taxation, and development fees.
