Ep. 611: Can Tech Save British Columbia’s Economy?

Guest: Katie Fitzmaurice (Invest Vancouver)

“Vancouver is one of the fastest growing tech hubs,” says Katie Fitzmaurice of Invest Vancouver. Fitzmaurice points to the significant announcement at the second annual Web Summit, when US-based Nutanix announced it was expanding significantly into Vancouver. The reason, says Fitzmaurice, is that “we have the talent, we have a world class tech sector, and we have a quality of life that attracts global talent.”

According to Nutanix, “Vancouver is where we are building our centre of excellence for Nutanix Agentic AI, and we are making a long-term commitment to the region and to the talent here,” Fitzmaurice says. “It’s confirmation [that] the Invest Vancouver ‘Invest Talent’ initiative is working… Working with industry, we set out to accelerate training, scale, attract investment, and innovate and it’s working.”

According to Invest Vancouver, the region is the western anchor of critical infrastructure and cyber-relevant secure digital capability. It is also a major hub for prime majors such as Microsoft, AWS, Fortinet, MDA, and the new RBC innovation hub that works alongside the Borealis AI and Cybersecurity R&D facility.

We invited Katie Fitzmaurice of Invest Vancouver to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the dynamic expansion to Vancouver’s Tech Centre and what lies ahead.
